Description: This introductory course of the Japanese healing art, Shiatsu, is a system for healing and health maintenance. Originating in 2500 BC, it is still widely practiced today. In class, the student will learn basic Asian philosophy, meditation guidelines, location of meridians as well as some basic acupressure that can be integrated into other massage work.

Presenter Background: Craig Parian trained at the International School of Shiatsu under the tutelage of Saul Goodman. His interest in Energy, Healing, and Spirit began in the sixties. Craig’s journey has included the in depth study of Yoga Philosophy, Third Level Mastery of Himalayan Bowl Healing, and the ongoing work of the healing of his own body/mind and Being.

Description:Thai Massage is an ancient healing system that has been practiced for more than 1,000 years, begining with Buddhist monks in temples. It is a combination of Ayurveda, Yoga, Buddhism and Thai healing techniques called “ancient healing touch”. This style of massage greatly effects muscle flexibility utilizing stretching movements and pressure on energy points. The recipient will experience feelings of relaxation, peace of mind, happiness, flexibility and youthfulness.

Must have a large piece of foam to work on ( approximately 4x4 ), a sheet to cover foam, a pillow, wear loose comfortable clothing to be able to do all the work as well as receive.

MYOFASCIAL THERAPY WORKSHOPS & CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

Myofascial Therapy is an effective form of Deep Tissue Massage which addresses postural distortions and chronic myofascial patterns of strain. Myofascial Therapy offers a client/therapist cooperative approach for improving structural alignment with specific emphasis on palpatory skills, postural assessment techniques, direction, pressure, breath awareness, perception and sensitivity. Other topics covered include body psychology and concepts of armoring, past trauma, bodywork boundaries and safety issues, and biomechanical aspects of strain.

Presenter Background:Joanne is a graduate of the Ann Arbor Institute of Massage Therapy. She holds a Master of Education degree from the University of Toledo. She earned certification in Myofascial and Neuromuscular Therapies (including treatment for TMJ dysfunction) and is trained in Swedish, Sports, and Scar Tissue Massage. She developed guidelines for massage therapists working in the University of Michigan hospital setting and provided hand and foot massage to infusion patients at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. She also served as massage therapist for the University of Michigan Integrative Medicine Clinic at Briarwood Family Practice. Joanne manages her own practice that includes on-site massage at businesses in the Ann Arbor area.

Description: AAIMT will sponsor a 3-day hands-on pregnancy massage workshop. Participants will learn the anatomy and physiology of pregnancy, emphasizing the body’s special needs at each stage of pregnancy and during early labor. Techniques from a variety of complementary modalities will be taught to ease pregnancy discomforts. Students will learn contraindications and guidelines for educating patients about risks during pregnancy, as well as resources for fitness. A competency exam with pregnant volunteers from the Center for the Childbearing Year will provide practical feedback for student achievement. A brief overview of skills marketing and physician networking will be included.

Course: Sports Massage I - Event Level

Description: We learn to work with an athlete in relation to the event the athlete participates in. We practice both pre- and post-event massage. This is to assist the athlete to warm up prior to the event and to "warm down" while encouraging circulation after the event.

Sports Massage is a rapidly emerging specialty within the massage therapy field. A combination of specialized techniques is used to prevent sports injuries; boost athletic endurance and performance; and accelerate recovery from injury or fatigue. The principles and techniques of Sports Massage include: the physiology of the injury and repair process, pre- and post-event work, maintenance work and injury assessment and treatment.
